The Universal Language
Arabic language is used as official language of Algeria, Egypt, Iraq, Jordan, Kuwait, Lebanon, Libya, Mauritania, Morocco, Oman, Saudi Arabia, Sudan, Syria, Tunisia, United Arab Emirates, Western Sahara, and Yemen as well as one of the six official languages of the United Nations. It is spoken by more than 200 million people as their mother tongue. It is also used throughout the world by Muslims as it is the language of the Holy Quran (Holy book of Muslims). It is necessary for every Muslims to learn this language to understand the teachings of Quran and Sunnah of Prophet Mohamed (Pbuh).
Arabic language belongs to the Semitic group of languages which includes Hebrew and Amharic. This language began to flourish after the rise of Islam. This language was used in Arab countries only, but when Islam spread all over the world, it was used by Muslims all over the world.
Arabic is the language which is written right to left, with 18 shapes of 28 alphabets specified by dots above or below. The alphabets are joined in script to make a cursive style.
There are three forms of Arabic, Classical Arabic, Modern Standard Arabic and Colloquial Arabic. The Classical form of Arabic is found in Quran and it is mainly used in Islamic religious texts. The Colloquial form of Arabic is the spoken Arabic which differs from place to place. The spoken Arabic language in Morocco differs from the spoken language of Kuwait, like this the colloquial language has different dialects which do not have a standard form.
Modern Standard Arabic is the Standard language which is used in books, newspapers on television and radio, in the mosques and in conversation between educated Arabs in meetings. It is the universal form of language which can be understood by all and used in conversation between Arab speaking people of different dialects.
Most of the languages which belong to Semitic group are now considered as ‘dead’. But Arabic flourished because of the rise of Islam, especially by the Islam’s Holy book ‘The Quran’.
